Wildlife and History in Argyll

Fly to Glasgow Airport and meander north by Loch Lomond, pausing perhaps to see Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe. The drive to your castle will take about two hours.

Barcaldine Castle

- Barcaldine Castle -

You will stay at Barcaldine Castle, built by 'Black Duncan of the Seven Castles' in the 16th century. And it looks the part - full of character, outside and in, with stone turnpike stairs, small windows and a benign ghost. Afternoon tea on arrival is included but since the castle does not offer dinner, we have included an evening meal at the nearby Barcaldine House Hotel - where the kitchen has just won two AA rosettes.

You are on the lovely west coast where you could wander all day enjoying the slow pace of life, but we are recommending something a little more dramatic - a trip out to the islands with Sea-Fari in a rigid hulled inflatable boat to enjoy wildlife, history, and to see (and hear) the extraordinary Corryvreckan Whirlpool.

On your way back to the airport we recommend that you stop to see Inveraray Castle, seat of the Dukes of Argyll since it was rebuilt (following a little local burning) in the 1750s. It's full of history, ridiculously opulent furniture and, strangely, Rob Roy's sporran.

- Looking from Easdale to Scarba island -

Your holiday includes:

  • Two nights bed and breakfast at Barcaldine Castle with afternoon tea on arrival
  • One dinner at Barcaldine House Hotel
  • A mid size car (such as a Vauxhall Astra) with satnav for 48 hours
  • Two entrance tickets for Inveraray Castle
  • Two tickets for a Sea-Fari to the Corryvreckan Whirlpool and round Scarba island.

There is so much to do and see in the area that it's impossible to list everything; but give us a call or email us to tell us what you, or your fellow traveller, particulary enjoys, and we'll make recommendations - views, pubs, walks, cafés, craft shops, curiosities.

And let us know if we can lay on anything extra for you. A bottle of champagne perhaps!

NOTE: Our castles are all quite small (Barcaldine has only three letting rooms) offering you an intimate and authentic castle experience. Please give us an alternative date for your stay if you can. Nothing will be taken from your card until we have confirmed to you that your requested date is available.

The price for Barcaldine Castle is £385 per person.

Bedroom in Barcaldine Castle

"Barcaldine Castle was an absolutely fantastic experience. The castle is a few centuries old but has been restored with a huge amount of charm and character, which makes you feel like you've been transported back in time. Wood-panelled dining room walls, huge log fires, spiral staircase, four-poster bed, views of the loch - these are just some of the reasons why we had such a special stay. Perfect for a romantic weekend, or if you just want to get away from it all."
