Saints and Sinners in the Far North
Not as far as John o' Groats, but about 45 miles north of Inverness Airport is the peaceful coastal town of Dornoch.

Golfers know Dornoch due to the 'Royal Dornoch' championship courses; celebrity watchers know it because Madonna's son was christened there (she was married at nearby Skibo Castle); for those who enjoy exploring the past, it is a little gold mine: the Cathedral has been there since it was founded by Saint Gilbert in 1239! Opposite the cathedral stands the Dornoch Castle Hotel, once the Bishop's Palace, now ready to welcome you!
Thirteen miles north of Dornoch is Dunrobin Castle, seat of the Earls of Sutherland since 1248. It was rebuilt in the 1920s and encapsulates aristocratic living of that period; there are wonderful views over the lovely garden and an impressive falconry display twice a day. |
The drive to Inverness is a lovely one, including the wildlife-rich Cromarty Firth and passing the gates of Glenmorangie Distillery - home, they say, to the 'Fifteen Men of Tain'. Will you stop for a dram?.
