Wandering and Discovering on the East Coast

- Ethie Castle -

Reputed to be Scotland's second oldest permanently inhabited castle, Ethie Castle is on the high cliffs of the Angus coast. It has been home to cardinals, earls and now to the dynamic Kirsten de Morgan who has lavished love upon both castle and garden, and still has sufficient energy to receive guests throughout the year.

You can fly to Edinburgh (lunch in St Andrews en route?) or to Dundee Airport (flights from London, Belfast and Birmingham).

The sands of Lunan Bay are just half an hour away; Kirriemuir (J. M. Barrie's birthplace) and some lovely walks in the Angus Glens are not much further. Close by is magnificent Glamis Castle, birthplace of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Glamis has everything - fine furnishings, royal interest, extensive grounds and a ghost that is still playing cards with the devil.

A 'must see' attraction in Dundee is RRS Discovery, the ship in which Captain Scott and his crew survived two winters in Antarctica (1902 - 1904) - an extraordinary story. You may also like to look in on Arbroath Abbey, famous for the ringing 'Declaration of Arbroath': "It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom..."

Your holiday includes:

  • Two nights bed and breakfast for two people at Ethie Castle
  • Dinner on the first night
  • A mid size car (such as a Vauxhall Astra) with satnav for 48 hours
  • Two entrance tickets for Glamis Castle
  • Two entrance tickets for Discovery Point.

There is so much to do and see in the area that it's impossible to list everything; but give us a call or email us to tell us what you, or your fellow traveller, particulary enjoys, and we'll make recommendations - views, pubs, walks, cafés, craft shops, curiosities.

And let us know if we can lay on anything extra for you. A bottle of champagne perhaps!

NOTE: Our castles are all quite small (Ethie Castle has four letting rooms) offering you an intimate and authentic castle experience. Please give us an alternative date for your stay if you can. Nothing will be taken from your card until we have confirmed to you that your requested date is available.

The price for Ethie Castle is £255 per person.

"We enjoyed the Ethie Castle and gardens. We made the most of our short time there exploring along the coast, wading in the sea, and hiking around the Red Castle. More great food - Arbroath smokies were truly unique and we developed quite a taste for them."

Maria Whitson,

July 2009.

"Ethie Castle ... made a few wrong turns in the dark but got there safe and sound ... great room!!! Excellent food ...felt at home with the fireplace and the dogs lying at our feet during dinner! The gardens were wonderful to explore in the morning and Yvonne gave us tons of tour info in the morning. We received a nice bottle of red with dinner which was nice."

Lesley McCrindle,

August 2010

"Ethie castle was terrific. The lady who owns it was very friendly and hospitable and the boys especially enjoyed being in a "real" castle. The rooms were large and clean, and I would recommend it to anyone."

Barbara McLeod,

July 2009.
